I stumbled upon this while searching for Grant High School on the web. "Mr. Daugaard" was an inspiration to me and I just wanted to say hi and THANKS.

I had a teacher at San Fernando High School also with the name Allen (or Alan) Daugaard for Biology (1970-71) and physiology (1972-3). I always remember him saying he wanted to transfer to another school. Is this the same person. It's been 37 years and I don't recognize the picture, though age does change us. BTW anyone know his status?

    Norm Herman, San Fernando, '73

I posed your question to Allen Daugaard and here is his response:

I taught at San Fernando from 1968-1973. It is possible that Norm Herman was one of my students in biology but we're talking 40 years ago. The name doesn't ring any bells with me . I was the only faculty member at that school at that time with the name Allen....so like I said, it is possible he was one of my students. You may find it interesting that during some of those years Hal Denner was a counselor at San Fernando as was Pearl Yoffee. Dan Issacs was the registrar (I think that was his title) and Hanna Thiele was a social studies teacher. We all transferred to Grant.

If you write Norm you can tell him that you contacted me. Tell him I retired in 1998 and I now live in the North Bay (about 50 miles north of San Francisco).

Hope all is well with you. Allen

This is definitely the Allen Daugaard that I took two classes from when I was at San Fernando High (biology 1970-71 and physiology 1972-73). I recognize all of the staff that he mentions in his email to you.

I will always remember that he suggested a book to me, "Joshua, Son of None". It foretold the genetic engineering/cloning advancements almost 30 years before the technology was established. Little memories stick.

Tell him that he had an influence on me as I continued my academic pursuits through college, grad school and medical school; achieving both an MD and PhD (in physiology BTW). Another young woman in the physiology class in 1972-3 (she came over from Alemany H. S.) also went to medical school. I hope Allen understands that he made a difference in young people's lives; particularly our lives. Thank you for talking with him.
